Happy Purim and Dia de la Independencia!

28 02 2010

Hi readers! It has been a weekend of crazy celebration. On Saturday the DR celebrated the 166th anniversary of its independence, and today Amy and I celebrated Purim. We felt as though the whole island was celebrating with us, as everyone geared up for independence day festivities with outlandish costumes, masks, music, and celebration.

We were well-costumed for the holiday (Amy’s friends lent her a costume and Jay pulled out an old NYPD shirt), and a touch of megillah reading by Jay capped things off. Separately, Amy got in touch with the Chabad in Santo Domingo, where we hope to spend a weekend sometime soon.

Serendipity in the service of celebration can’t be bad. ‘Glad those two days came together for you in the DR. Oh, and the two of you look great! Happy Purim and (in light of you leaving behind the 9 to 5 lifestyle) happy independece, too.

@Michael – The significance of an independence day celebration totally went over my head until your comment brought it up. Thanks!

Upon further reading our link to Wikipedia, the link probably gave too involved an explanation… I think that many/most Jews’ experience of Purim is less historical and more celebratory these days.

Happy Purim to you too!
