A few days ago we met a fantastic couple from Michigan, and after chatting for a while they invited us to their house in the La Catalina neighborhood. Little did we know that their house would be gorgeous, that they would be fantastic hosts who would take us out for a great tour of the area in their Jeep, and that they were former world-class bodybuilders!
One thing that I enjoyed about Larry and Velma was that their Midwestern (and Southern, as they’re originally from Alabama) charm stayed with them as they became successful in business. After showing us around their beautiful home and property (they host parties for around 40 people pretty regularly) and sitting down with them for an El Presidente, we went for an awesome Jeep ride to a busy local beach where families and friends congregate each Sunday. While there, we (= the Jeep) rescued a man whose car had been stuck in the sand for seeming hours and who was trying in vain to dig it out.
Elections in the DR will be held in May and the political rallies (parades with loud music and posters of politicians) started this week. Many of our friends here don’t vote at all because the corruption is so rampant and election promises always remain unfilled – to a larger degree here than in the U.S. On our way back from the beach, we passed by the first of the local political rallies on the way to a lively evening of entertainment at Cabrera’s main square.
Back at the resort after a great afternoon, Amy glammed-out for dinner!
