Reno, Life as a Costume Party and Off to Burning Man

29 08 2010

[Those of you who subscribe to our feed got an accidental preview of an awesome contest that we’re launching this Thursday. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, good! Keep an eye out for your chance to win a $40 prize for doing pretty much nothing.]

It feels like we’ve been in Reno for a while, though it’s only been a few days.  Dawn, our new Couchsurfing acquaintance-turned-awesome-friend has adopted us and we’ve spent just about every day since Tuesday with her and her crew cooking, playing music, cuddling newborn kittens and going out on the town.

We spent Shabbat with Chabad, and celebrating with even a few members of the Jewish community was a nice change from our earlier isolated Shabbat experiences.  Yair joked that – now that someone in the area was celebrating Shabbat (the folks at Chabad) – we didn’t need to.  And though we did observe the day, there’s truth that sometimes your identity and practice are stronger when religion and community are not around you, because you can’t take community and tradition for granted when it’s not already there for you.

Otherwise our time has been spent body surfing in the Truckee River (SO cold and thrilling too), checking out the University of Nevada (where I witnessed an AWESOME flash mob at the student club fair), getting a potential job offer as a dance instructor at a local studio (training starts on September 7th), meeting other Burners (costume party, anyone?),  and getting the RV and ourselves ready for a full-on week of craziness (we just picked up bicycles AND our solar panels!!!).  I am so frickin’ excited, and spending time making music and being silly with creative people has been such a welcome change from straight-laced society.

We head to the playa tonight at 3 AM with a full RV (four ride-sharers in tow!), and are already high with anticipation.  There likely won’t be any phone or Internet access on the playa and – even if there is – I hope to stay computer-free for the week, but we’ve scheduled a couple of posts that we’ve been wanting to share for a while and we will certainly give you guys a full update on our return.  Get excited!  🙂

I’d like to suggest the name “Jamie” for your RV. It’s a contraction of your names, of course. I hope you continue to have a safe and enjoyable journey and a Shana Tova u’Mitukah! Love, Mimi

Ha, I’m a far cry from Halle Berry but I’ll take the compliment any day. Thanks, dear!
