Applied Physics and The Fruit Game

5 09 2010

So, what’s the fruit game? I learned it in the airport on my way back from Israel. Essentially, you toss a fruit up in the air and see how many times you can clap before you catch it again. Miss the catch and the claps don’t count. I’m at eight claps!

But how does the applied physics fit in? Like many people, I remember plodding through my high school science classes thinking “This is cool stuff, but it’s pretty useless for my daily life.” Not so!

During the game, the girl sitting next to me mentioned something about throwing the fruit twice as high so I could get twice as many claps in. But… gravity is an accelerating force, and tossing the fruit twice as high doesn’t give me twice as much time.

Thank you, Dr. Baughman.
